After a hospital wouldn't give him a ride home, a Florida man allegedly stole an ambulance, led troopers on a multi-mile chase, and calmly finished a beer once he finally stopped.
Michael J. Esquilin, 43, was refused a ride home by emergency personnel at HCA South Tampa Hospital on March 15, 2025, so he allegedly stole an ambulance from the hospital instead. Florida Highway Patrol troopers chased him for several miles through South Tampa as he ran stop signs, drove on the wrong side of the road, and nearly hit multiple vehicles. When the chase finally ended at South Hubert Avenue and West Empedrado Street, video showed Esquilin sitting in the ambulance drinking a beer before troopers pulled him out. He was charged with burglary and grand theft of an emergency vehicle, fleeing and eluding, driving with a suspended license, DUI, and resisting arrest; prosecutors noted he had four prior DUI convictions. A judge ordered GPS monitoring and a ban on alcohol while he awaits trial, and he was held on $33,000 bond.
