Content note
This incident involved a hoax bomb and hostage threat that triggered a real emergency law enforcement response; no one was actually harmed.
A hoax 911 caller tells Monroe County dispatchers he's suicidal, armed with a Glock, rigged to detonate a bomb, and holding family hostage in the basement of a Key Largo home, then brags about it on Snapchat.
The Monroe County Sheriff's Office swarmed a home on Third Road in Key Largo on September 6, 2025, after a 911 caller claimed to be inside, suicidal, and armed with a Glock. The caller escalated the hoax further, telling dispatchers that if anyone tried to open the door he would detonate a bomb, and that he had family members tied up in the basement. None of it was true. Deputies determined it was a 'swatting' call, a prank meant to draw a massive police response to an address with no real emergency. Detectives traced the call using online communications and digital evidence, eventually identifying 20-year-old Leonardo Javier Barrera of Ruskin as the culprit after he admitted to the stunt on Snapchat. Barrera was arrested in October 2025 and charged with unlawful use of a two-way communication device and giving false information concerning the commission of a felony.
