Florida Man allegedly poses as an attorney at a stranger's traffic stop, using a real lawyer's name and website to try to talk officers out of an arrest.
Derek Zachery Schaufus, 30, of Palm Bay, showed up in a suit and tie to a traffic stop on Interstate 95 in West Melbourne on April 25, 2026, where officers were arresting a woman he didn't know after finding drugs in her car. Schaufus introduced himself as attorney 'Johnathan Mills' and tried to negotiate on her behalf; when officers asked for proof, he pulled up the real Mills's law firm website and claimed he was the firm's secretary using that name. The phone number he gave traced back to his own cellphone, and the actual attorney told investigators he had never heard of Schaufus. The Florida Bar confirmed Schaufus is not a licensed attorney, and he was charged with misrepresenting himself as qualified to practice law, obstruction by a disguised person, and resisting an officer without violence.
