Pretty wild
A Spring Hill man impersonates wholesale produce companies to redirect truckloads of onions and potatoes and vanishes without paying.
Jason Canals, 39, of Spring Hill, was indicted on eight counts of interstate transport of stolen property after federal prosecutors said he ran a produce-diversion scheme against wholesale companies. Prosecutors say Canals used a legitimate company's name and email signature to order shipments of onions and potatoes, then redirected the trucks to other locations while the produce was still in transit and never paid for it. In other cases, he allegedly sent victims fake documentation claiming the shipments had already been prepaid. The scheme is accused of costing wholesalers more than $600,000 in stolen produce and wasted transportation costs, and Canals faces up to 10 years in federal prison if convicted.
