Content note
This incident involved real injury to a person: a Home Depot employee sustained bite wounds and scratches.
A woman's pet spider monkey named Spanky escapes her car and attacks two different Home Depot cashiers in separate incidents.
Tina Ballard, 56, kept a pet spider monkey named Spanky who twice got loose and attacked employees at a Home Depot in Okeechobee County. In May, the monkey jumped from a shopping cart and grabbed a cashier's shirt, leaving marks on her shoulder and back. The following month, Spanky attacked cashier Marilyn Howard, biting her arm, grabbing her hair, and scratching her face, leaving her bloodied. When Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission investigators went looking for Ballard, they learned she had fled to Linville Land Harbor, North Carolina, with Spanky in tow; she was arrested there and held for extradition. She faced charges including allowing a wild animal to escape, lacking required wildlife permits, failing to immunize the monkey, and felony tampering with evidence.
